Excerpt from an Amway advertisement circa 1971:

"Amway products are designed and intended to be reasonably priced, generating honest value for the customer and high repeat business for the distributor."

From the Rich DeVos tape "Principles of Amway:"

"The Amway Plan is primarily a sales plan, not a recruiting plan. The Amway plan does not degenerate into a "wholesale buying club" because all its products are reasonably priced."

"I want to talk about sales because that point always seems to be glossed over. Let me be frank about this: If you were told you did not have to sell in this business, then you are a little more naive than you should be; because for a business, any business, the fundamental principle, the only justification for existence at all, is when that business delivers a legitimate product or service to a customer at a fair price. You can call it helping friends, you can call it moving products, you can call it anything you like; but ultimately that product must be sold in the marketplace at a profit for your survival. We dedicate ourselves to that end."

Quotes from a Dexter Yager speech, circa 1971:

"You don't have to sell the product. Really! If you're using it yourself. And if you're NOT using it yourself, I recommend you get out of the business. Because if you don't have enough faith to use it yourself, quit cheating your friends! I would feel like I was the biggest cheat in the world if I was using someone else's products. But if you believe in the product, it sells itself!"

"My wife and I want to be your best friends. We want to share our standard of living with you. Of course, if you want to do better, we'll show you the way, and we won't be jealous!"

"We're successful up here (pointing to his head) because we wanted to be. We started thinking we wanted more out of life. And when something came along, we would go at it. And we weren't going to let our friends steal our dreams from us! And I say "friends" with a (HUH!) Acquaintances is more like it, right? All my friends are in Amway! That's right. All my friends are in Amway. Now I used to have some people I thought were some friends, but they're acquaintances today because they ain't in the business. I was willing to share the dream with them, but they weren't willing to pay the price. They laughed!

Note that the quotes above were said by someone who was a Double Diamond at the time, who had been full time in Amway for over seven years, and was even then one of the top distributors in the company.

Said by Charlie Marsh, Crown Direct Distributor, 1971:

You have to understand that what you have in your hands is more powerful than any job or anything else you've got. You've got to understand that Amway means a Way of Life! It's GOD, it's LOVE, its FRIENDSHIP. It's all the things the Bible writes about!

And, lest we forget, Exodus 20:3:

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
